Army Hardtack Recipe

Ingredients:

4 cups flour (perferably whole wheat)

4 teaspoons salt

Water (about 2 cups)

Pre-heat oven to 375° F

Makes about 10 pieces

Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Add just enough water (less than two cups) so that the mixture will stick together, producing a dough that won’t stick to hands, rolling pin or pan. Mix the dough by hand. Roll the dough out, shaping it roughly into a rectangle. Cut into the dough into squares about 3 x 3 inches ...

This is a great survival food for weeklong trips into the bush.

2 cups whole wheat flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons milk powder

Makes enough to last 1 person for one day. Approx 2 servings.

Combine ingredients. It may be easier to melt the butter first. Once combined, slowly add water until you have an easy to work with dough. Make sure not to make it too loose.

You can add other things to it to spice it up. ...

This is a great knife. It is shave sharp, yet big and heavy enough to chop. I even used this thing to trim the bushes in front of my house and it worked better than a knife should. The sheath is hard so the blade wont puncture it, it has a pouch in the front to carry your sharpening stone, and it has all the loops for securing it to your thigh.

Fire Bed

A fire bed will definately save your life. When sleeping in a cold environment, most of your heat will be lost through the ground, even in a sleeping bag. With this simple fire construction, you can raise the temperature of the ground to 100 degrees F.

First, locate an area that is as sheltered from the wind as possible. Be sure you can dig 10-12 inches deep without running into too many rocks or roots. Dig the trench 6' long, and 12-15 inches wide. Light your fire in the trench then ...

Primitive Weapons

-Throwing Stick (Rabbit stick)

Find a branch with a slight curve in it. With your knife or a rock, shave opposite sides down a bit so they are both relatively flat, sort of like a boomerang. It’s as easy as that. Throwing it accurately takes a lot of practice, but once you figure it out this is an extremely effective weapon for harvesting small game or birds.

-Pine Knot Club

This is an effective weapon for dispatching trapped game, cracking open ...

Soap Making

When making your own soap, it's always important to follow a few basic steps. The first is being sure you start with quality ingredients. I personally used beef tallow, (fat gathered from around the kidneys.) I have gotten terrific tallow and "meaty" tallow before, so when shopping, be picky if you can. Tallow is a flaky, compact fat that's white in color, although will sometimes contain blood or tissue from the beef. The less red that it contains, the cleaner and purer the fat.
